André Steyn founded Steyn Capital in 2009, with the mission to seek out and exploit market inefficiencies. Having worked in corporate finance advisory and as a dedicated short selling analyst for renowned hedge fund Ziff Brothers Investments in New York, André focussed on applying forensic accounting analysis to identify companies who were misleading investors with their financial reporting. Forensic accounting analysis continues to be a cornerstone of the Steyn Capital investment process, contributing not only to our exceptional short selling track record, but importantly also in avoiding potential pitfalls on the long side. Later as CEO of billion-dollar global hedge fund Temujin Fund Management in London, André observed the high success rate achieved by applying developed market research techniques into less-efficient global markets. This insight ultimately led André to return to South Africa to found Steyn Capital Management to focus on investing in these markets.
